Tibetan Refugee Reception Centre – Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, India – photo gallery

Every year thousands of Tibetans escape to exile in India and Nepal. One of their dream is to meet HH Dalai Lama and start a new life there. In the Tibetan capital in-exile, Dharamsala, located in the hilly state of Himachal Pradesh there are many institutions  that provide support for the refugees. One of the most important institutions is the Tibetan Refugee Reception Centre where newcomers from Tibet are interviewed and where they receive medical assistance. Reception Centre provides them basic shelter for the first part of stay in exile. Some of the refugees bring with them truly gruesome stories of their imprisonment and torture in their homeland. In my pictures below you can see drawings and paintings made by Tibetan children and adults about their experiences in Tibet. Painting therapy is organized and guided by Ama Adhe Tapontsang – a Tibetan woman who spent 27 years in Chinese prisons and managed to escape to India in 1987. You can find her book The Voice that Remembers: A Tibetan Woman’s Inspiring Story of Survival on Amazon:

There are also some pictures showing items made in Chinese prisons by Tibetan prisoners and smuggled into settlements in exile:
