Tibetan Medicine in India and Nepal

Tibetan medicine is a centuries-old traditional medical system that employs a complex approach to diagnosis, incorporating techniques such as pulse analysis and urinalysis, and utilizes behavior and dietary modification, medicines composed of natural materials (e.g., herbs and minerals) and physical therapies (e.g. Tibetan acupuncture, moxabustion, etc.) to treat illness. (wikipedia.org)

The roots of Tibetan medicine is the source text of Medicine Tantra, an 11th-century work. It consists of four volumes: Root Tantra, Explanatory Tantra, Oral Tradition Tantra and tantra of pulse diagnosis.

The major center of Tibetan medical education is Men Tse Khang, the Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute established in 1961 in the Tibetan capital in exile, Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, India.

One of the treatments is Tibetan moxibustion (or hot acupuncture) called Metsa. Doctors use burning herbs that heat up the golden needle and transmit energy to the specific point on the patient’s body.
